Save The Vulture!

Vultures have such a bad rep, and I don’t understand why. They are such beautiful birds and do such an important job in the balance of the ecosystem.

Of late, Vultures have been persecuted from poisining due to treatment given to cattle. That is, sadly, not the only major problem that they face. Earlier this year Private Eye highlighted the plight of Vultures under EU rule. During the BSE “crisis”, the EU made a statue of law which stated that farmers in Europe could no longer leave carcasses out on their land. The EU ruled this without a single thought for the balance of the delicate ecosystem, and now, some 15 years later are reaping their reward: vultures in mainland Europe are on the brink of extinction. It has become not unusual to find species of vulture often thousands of miles away from their homeland in the search food. Their search is often fruitless, and they starve to death.
I haven’t yet been lucky enough to see vultures in their natural habitat, but I have seen them at falconry centres, including the Hawk Conservancy Trust who are working to conserve the African White-Backed Vulture. They are all beautiful birds who serve such an important purpose, and we should do all that we can to enable their survival in the future. This is more important than building homes, dredging rivers, encroaching on their natural territory. Vultures are nature’s cleanup squad, and they do a damn good job of it. They are not to be feared and are not repulsive. Humans eat dead animals, vultures just happen to eat off the ground.

Stop persecuting them, and start helping them.
