Rayne Foundry Closed in approximately 2001.
Originally the foundry produced agricultural implements for the local rural community.
During the World Wars, the foundry made hand-grenades and mortar bomb cases.
After the end of the Second World War farm machinery manufacture ceased and the whole site was devoted to casting.
From what I saw, most of these casts were clay (chimney/guttering) or railings.
A planning application to turn the site into dwellings, by Fairview Homes, was withdrawn.
I heard mutterings of the word "contamination".
Rayne Foundry was the last working example of any form of Foundry in the county of Essex.
That makes it all the more sad that it has been left to get into such a sorry state.
Apart from the bad state of the buildings, it looks like everyone just left on a normal day.
I wonder if anyone expected to return again?
At present, because I have such little information, I would appreciate more.
